　告げられた内容を口の中で確かめ、ペトラは形のいい眉を顰める。
　可能性、それがクリンドの有する不思議パゥワーである『転移』を使うため、引き換えにしなくてはならないモノ。例えば莫大なマナであるとか、稀少な魔晶石が必要であるとか、そうしたわかりやすい対価は思い描いていたが――、

『対価が可能性って、なんじゃらほい』

　ペトラが抱いたものと同じ疑問に、盛大に首をひねってくれるイマジナリースバル。彼は実体がない幻影なのをいいことに、空中でくるくると横回転しながら、クリンドの説明に納得いっていないことを全力でアピールしていた。
　もっとも、その可愛いアピールはペトラにしか見えないのだが。

『っていうかこの人、『憂鬱』の魔女因子って言った？　言ったよな？　魔女因子ってあれだぞ、エキドナが言ってた碌でもなさそうなキーワードの一つ！』

「……わたし、あの『強欲の魔女』のこと、あんまりよく思ってないから、どのぐらい信用していいかわからないんだけど」

『いや、まぁ、あいつはあの通り、誤解を生みやすいタイプだからな。俺も心を許してるわけじゃねぇけど、対人能力の低さの表れって思うと、いくらか見方が変わるんじゃないかなとは思うぜ。間違いなく性悪ではある。性悪では』

「だよね。わたしのハンカチで……何でもない」

　対価以外の部分に着目し、声を震わせるイマジナリースバルにペトラは目を伏せる。
『死者の書』で目にした絶望的な光景と、それを終わらせるために『魔女』が用意し、スバルが選んだ方法は、ペトラにとって決して口にしたいものではない。直視したいものでもなかったが、目を逸らせるものでもないという、ちょうど厄介なものだ。
　ともあれ――、

「魔女因子ってことはあ、家令さんも大罪司教だったってことお？」

　その聞きづらい内容に、ある意味、天然で空気を読まないメィリィが切り込んだ。
『死者の書』を読む以前のペトラには覚えのない単語だが、どうやらメィリィはどこかで魔女因子について知る機会があったらしい。魔女因子と『魔女』――ひいては、大罪司教との関係性は、ペトラも問い質さなくてはいけないと思ったことだ。
　正直――、

『もし、このクリンドさんがペテルギウスと同じ大罪司教だってんなら、さっきまでの和やかな話し合いもどこまで信用できたもんだか……』

「『暴食』の大罪司教だったスピカちゃんを許したスバルがそれを言うの？」

『何言ってんの！？　レムあんな目に遭わせた『暴食』を俺が許すわけねぇだろ！？』

「……しばらく、わたしの最近の記憶を見ててもらった方がいいかも」

　ベアトリスとの関係もそうだが、ペトラが目にした『死者の書』の時系列のスバルは、現在のスバルとの知識や関係性の齟齬がとても大きい。思い返すと、時々スバルがエキドナの悪口を言っていた覚えもあるので、ペトラの知らない範囲で、スバルとエキドナとの間には色々とあったのだろうと推測する。
　間違いなく、あれは悪い女の人なので、ペトラの勘が正しかったわけだ。――と、そんな脳内会議の傍ら、ペトラはメィリィと一緒に油断なくクリンドを見る。

　クリンドが悪人ではないと信じているし、大罪司教だったスピカという前例を知ってはいるが、それでエミリアのように手放しに相手を信じるのはまた話が別だ。エミリアのその純朴さは可愛くて魅力的なので、そのまますくすく育ってほしいが。

「メィリィの疑念は当然のものですが、私は大罪司教ではありません。否定。そもそも、『憂鬱』の魔女因子は例外的な代物です。欠番。たとえ、この因子と適合するものであっても、『魔女』や大罪司教には加わりません。爪弾き」

「――――」

「以前の所有者……『憂鬱』の魔女因子に適合したものは、『憂鬱の魔人』を名乗っていました。自称……いえ、他称です。あのものは呼ばれ方に拘泥するものではなく、ただそう呼ぶのが相応しいと、彼の妻がそう称していただけでしたから。愛称」

「魔人……」
『魔女じゃなく魔人か！　わかる話だ。魔男とか言い出したらどうしようかと』

　感性に合ったらしく、イマジナリースバルが指を鳴らして感心する。一方、ペトラは口の中で呟いた単語、それと合わせてクリンドを見た。
　先の説明、それをクリンドにも適用するなら、

「じゃあ、クリンド兄様も『憂鬱の魔人』ってこと？」

「いいえ。否定。私は『憂鬱』の魔女因子に適合していません。故に、『憂鬱』の権能を引き出すのに対価を必要とするのです。不適。本来、魔女因子に適合したものは権能の行使に対価を必要としません。オド・ラグナが認めた、世界を書き換える権利です。公式」

「世界を書き換える権利、ねえ。よく聞くけどお、オド・ラグナって人ももうちょっと選んで渡してほしいものだわあ」

『メィリィに同意』

　不満げに唇を尖らせるメィリィ、その頭を触れられない手で撫でながらのイマジナリースバルに、ペトラは唇に指を当て、情報を整理する。

　クリンドが大罪司教であることも、『魔人』であることも否定したのは信じたい。それから、魔女因子がもたらすらしい特別な力――適合者なら使い放題のそれを、不適合者が使おうとするのに対価がいると、そのルールも呑み込んだ。
　それが、クリンドの『転移』ならぬ『圧縮』を使うための支払いならば、

「例えば、クリンド兄様の持ってる魔女因子を他の人……わたしが使えたら、対価を払わなくても『転移』し放題ってこと？」

『ペトラ！　それは絶対ヤバいやつだからやめとけ！』

「なんで？　スバルも、わかってるでしょ？　……スバルの『死に戻り』って、絶対、クリンド兄様の言ってる魔女因子と同じものだよ」

『それは……』

　思い当たる節があって、イマジナリースバルが苦い顔で黙り込む。
　エキドナとの茶会で、スバルは魔女因子を取り込んでいる事実――あのときは、直前に倒した『怠惰』の大罪司教のものという話だったが、『嫉妬の魔女』がスバルに執着する理由なども含めると、おそらく、それだけではない。
『死に戻り』は、魔法でも呪術でも術技でもない、明らかに異質な力――すなわち、権能である可能性が高い。だとしたら、ナツキ・スバルもまた『魔人』だ。

「だったら、わたしは『魔女』になってもいい。スバルと一緒なら怖くないもん」

『……早とちりかもしれねぇだろ。俺の『死に戻り』が権能とかと無関係の、こう、まだ顔見せもしてこない、異世界物に付き物の神様の贈り物のパターンだって』

「スバルって、隠し事はよくするけど、嘘は下手だよね」

　だから、ボロが出ないように隠し事ばかりして、話し合いになるのを避けるのだろう。
　そんな想い人の優しさを愛おしく思いながら、ペトラは目をつむり、それからクリンドを改めて見返す。クリンドは微かに目を見張り、その視線と、意思の強さに感銘を受けたような顔をしていたが――、

「残念ですが、その方法は採択できません。否決」

「――っ、どうしてっ」

「第一に、ペトラが『憂鬱』の魔女因子に適合することはありえない。これともう一つ、『虚飾』の因子は欠番……いいえ、番外というべきでした。例外的な因子であり、それぞれたった一人の適合者――勇者と聖女のために調律されたモノ。特注。他の誰にも適合はしませんし、それに」

「……それに？」

「適合したものたちですら、精神の堕落からは逃れられなかった。忸怩」

　目を伏せ、唇を引き結んだクリンド。その反応に、ペトラは彼が件の適合者――勇者と聖女の二人を知っていたのだと感じ取る。もっと言えば、『憂鬱』の魔女因子の唯一の適合者であり、精神の堕落に陥った『憂鬱の魔人』こそが、その勇者。
　そして、クリンドがその『魔人』の魔女因子を持っているということは、その勇者はすでにこの世のどこにも――、

「はあいはあい、とおっても大事なお話をしてるのはわかるんだけどお、ペトラちゃんの危なっかしい決心もダメだよってされちゃったところでえ、本題に戻りましょお？」

「む、危なっかしいって……」

「危なっかしかったじゃなあい。もし、ペトラちゃんが魔女因子なんてものに気に入られても、わたしは絶対に反対。あんな力、頼っちゃダメよお」

「メィリィちゃん……」

　悪気なく、それが心からペトラを心配しての言葉とわかる。
　魔女因子について、『魔女』の茶会に参加しないで知っていたメィリィだ。今の言い方からしても、魔女因子を持つ存在――大罪司教とのエンカウント経験があるのかもしれない。そんな彼女の助言は、しかし皮肉なものだ。

『――――』

　眉尻を下げ、複雑というには優しすぎる顔でメィリィを見つめるイマジナリースバル。
『聖域』とロズワール邸を取り巻く事件があり、そのいざこざの中で捕縛された以上、メィリィはあの件――『死者の書』で見た、ペトラやフレデリカの死にも関与している。
　ペトラとメィリィの関係が、ただの『死』の被害者と加害者で終わらずに済んだのは、他ならぬスバルの『死に戻り』のおかげなのだ。
　だからどうしても、ペトラは力も使いようだと思ってしまうが――、

「……うん、わかった」

「そお。いい子ねえ」

　ペトラの返事に、露骨に安堵したメィリィ。彼女の手を握り、ペトラは頷く。
　どのみち、『憂鬱』の魔女因子がペトラに適合しないなら、クリンドの代わりに因子の保有者になって、対価を無視しようという作戦は取れない。
　スバルが『魔人』ならペトラも『魔女』、というのは単純に惹かれるシチュエーションというだけで、メリットがないなら廃案にすべき選択肢だ。

「メィリィの言う通り、本題に戻りましょう。復刻。いずれにせよ、説明した経緯で対価の支払いが必要になります。そして対価とは、世界に与える影響力。可能性」

「――。もうちょっと詳しくお願いします」

「例えば、詠唱一つで火を起こす魔法があります。その利便性は言うまでもなく、この魔法によって多くの未来が拓かれる。有望。調理、医療、彫金、鍛冶、戦争……枚挙に暇がありません。膨大。これが影響力であり、可能性です。そして――」

「……対価にその魔法を差し出したら、その魔法のおかげで起こるはずだったが全部なくなっちゃう？」

「その分だけ、世界には本来使われるはずだった可能性の余地が残る。その余地、余白の分だけ、適合していない『憂鬱』の権能を行使できる。完了」

　その締めくくり方で、ペトラはクリンドが必要な説明を終えたと理解する。
　話は、わかった。――要するに、リソースの問題だ。オド・ラグナが管理している、世界を運用するためのリソースには、限度がある。
　本来、限度一杯使い切っているリソースを、何かを対価として捧げることで余らせ、その余剰分をこっそりと使うのが、クリンドの権能の使用条件なのだ。

　そこまでわかったところで、利発で可憐なペトラはもう一個気付いてしまう。

「……わたしたちが帝国にいくのに、たくさんクリンド兄様に権能を使ってもらいましたよね。あの対価は？」

「――。旦那様が。内緒」

「……本当に、ヤダ」

　苛立たしさと憎たらしさで、ペトラはお腹の中が煮えくり返りそうになる。
　あの状況で、スバルたちを助けにいくのに陣営のみんなが全力を振り絞った。ベアトリスはスバルとの再会を信じて眠り続け、オットーは主義を曲げてまで実家を頼った。その方針をエミリアが必死に示し、もちろんペトラもできる全部をしたつもりだ。
　だというのに、一番代償を支払ったのが、その事実を語ろうともしないロズワールというのは、ペトラにとってとんでもない屈辱だった。

『なんだろ、贖罪の気持ちとかかな？　『聖域』とか屋敷のことごめんね的な』

「そんなわかりやすい気持ちじゃないと思う。だから、旦那様って嫌いなの……！」

『うーん、ペトラのお怒りごもっとも……』

　まだ、ペトラの記憶の帝国部分まで読み込めていないのか、感情の部分でペトラと一致してくれないイマジナリースバルがもどかしいが、この醜くてドロドロした嫉妬心までわかってほしいとは思わないので、ペトラはそのドロドロを心の井戸に投げ込み、蓋をして決して覗き込めないよう釘を打つ。
　ロズワールへの不満の蓄積は今さらだ。そして、ロズワールがクリンドの権能の使用条件を満たす上で、適切な人材であることにも納得がいく。

「旦那様なら、魔法とか魔造具とか、対価に出せそうなものがたくさんある」

　もちろん、たくさんあればいくら出しても惜しくない、なんて話ではない。
　思い入れの多寡をオド・ラグナが評価に入れるかはわからないが、手放さなければ世界に影響を与えていたような『可能性』だ。それがどんなものであれ、思い入れのないもので世界が動かせるなんてペトラは思わない。

　――『可能性』には、情熱や思い入れが必要だ。
　そうでないものを差し出して、安直な救いを得ようなんて姑息な考えで、本当に大事なものを取り戻そうなんて、そんな浅ましい理屈が成立するはずがない。
　だからペトラは――、

「――わたし、何か差し出してもいいわよお」

『おいおい』

　ペトラと同じ発想に至ったのか、メィリィが静かにそうこぼす。イマジナリースバルが目をぱちくりとさせる中、メィリィは「だってえ」と続け、

「わたしが生きてるのだって、元を正せばお兄さんたちが見逃してくれたおかげだものお。その恩返しなんてつもりはないけどお、わかりやすい筋じゃないかしらあ」

『ペトラ、この子……メィリィを止めろ！　この子と、今の俺との間にどんなことがあったのかわからねぇが、そんなつもりで助けてねぇよ！』

「うん、そうだよね」

　血相を変えたイマジナリースバルの言い分は、しかしすんなりと受け入れられる。
　スバルがメィリィを助けたのは、彼女に無理をさせたり、どこかで恩返ししろなんて打算的なものじゃなくて、ただ助けたかったからに違いない。
　スバルはメィリィに、その可能性を閉じるようなことはさせたがらないはずだ。

「メィリィちゃんはダメ。メィリィちゃんが差し出せそうなもので、一番価値があるのって魔獣を操る加護だけど、それがなくなったらメィリィちゃん無価値だから」

「まあ！　ペトラちゃんったらひどいわあ」

「ごめんね。無価値は言いすぎ。メィリィちゃんは可愛いだけになっちゃう」

　正直なところ、スバルもエミリアたちも、それでも構わないと言いそうではある。しかし、自分がただの可愛い女の子になることを、他でもないメィリィが認められない。
　ペトラにはそれが痛いほどわかる。――周りのみんなが思っているほど、可愛い女の子たちは可愛い女の子ってだけでいられないのだ。

「――ペトラ様、メィリィ様」

　そこへ、不意打ち気味の声が届き、ペトラたちがパッと竜車を振り返る。そこに、竜車の荷台から飛び降り、こちらに駆けてくる少女――フラムの姿があった。
　アウグリア砂丘の移動中、自発的に意識を失った彼女が目を覚ましたのだ。フラムが意識を失った経緯、そこには彼女の加護が関係していて――、

「フラムちゃんっ、起きてくれてよか――」

「『念話の加護』の使用条件を満たしました。妹と……グラシスと連絡がつきます。フェルト様やラチンス様たちともやり取りできるかと」

「――――」

　安否を確かめ合うより優先し、自分の状況を手早く伝えてくるフラム。
　目覚めてすぐ、ラインハルトと『嫉妬の魔女』との激突のことで身内と連絡を取り合いたかっただろうに、それをぐっと堪えてくれたことに感謝しかない。
　間違いなく、フラムからの連絡を受けたフェルト陣営も、アルが起こした暴挙の情報を知り、事態の解決に動いているだろう立場だ。

『ラインハルトが動けない状況じゃ、フェルトとかロム爺にどこまで頼っていいもんか未知数すぎる気もするが……』

「――。ううん。わたしたちだけでやることに拘っちゃダメ」

『ペトラ……』

「これはもう、わたしたちだけの問題じゃなくて、王国のみんなの問題だから」

　アルが暴走し、ナツキ・スバルとベアトリスの身柄が奪われた――もはや、事態はそうしたミクロな問題ではなく、『剣聖』と『神龍』、『嫉妬の魔女』が入り乱れる、国家規模、世界規模の状況に陥ったと考えるべきなのだ。
　したがって、最も事情をわかっているペトラたちが、情報を出し渋ってはならない。

「フラムちゃん、すぐにフェルト様たちの居場所を聞いて。このクリンド兄様がいれば、場所さえわかったら合流できるから」

「――っ、承知いたしました」

　手順を整理したペトラの指示に、一瞬だけクリンドを見たフラムが、詳しい事情を聞きたい気持ちを堪え、すぐに承諾する。
　代わりに「ペトラちゃん？」と袖を引いたのはメィリィだ。

「まだ、家令さんに渡す対価の話が済んでないわあ」

「――ううん、それならもう、決めてあるから」

「ええ？」

　その答えに目を丸くするメィリィ、袖を掴む彼女の指を優しくほどいて、ペトラはさっとクリンドに近付くと、横目でイマジナリースバルの方を見た。
　ペトラの行動、それをまじまじと見つめる彼に、それが自分の見ている都合のいい幻影だとわかっていても、

「ちょっとだけ、耳塞いでて」

　そのペトラのお願いに、イマジナリースバルは一拍おいて、素直に従った。そうしてイマジナリースバルが耳を塞ぐと、ペトラは「クリンド兄様」と背伸び。そのままクリンドの耳元に口を近付けて、彼にそっと耳打ちする。
　それは――、

「――――」

「――っていうのは、対価になる？」

　踵を下ろしたペトラ、その声を潜めた問いに、クリンドは凝然と目を見張っていた。小首を傾げ、自分でも究極に可愛い仕草をしたペトラ、その様子にクリンドは息を吐く。
　長く深く、嘆息と共にモノクルを外し、その素顔でペトラを見つめ直した。

「可能でしょう。概算。ですが、ペトラ、それは――」

「よかった」

「――――」

「わかってたけどね。――わたしには、世界を動かせる『可能性』があるってっ」

　自分の胸を堂々と張り、ペトラはそれ以上をクリンドに言わせなかった。
　クリンドにしか聞かせなかった問い、その答えは得られた。その答えに、ペトラはどんなものだと鼻高々――クリンドはクリンドだ。その評価がオド・ラグナと一致するとは限らないが、少なくとも、クリンドはその『可能性』の価値を認めた。

「対価を差し出します、クリンド兄様。わたしたちで、世界……ううん、世界なんてホントはどうでもいいの。ただ、大切な人たちを助けたいだけ」

「――承知しました、ペトラ。あなたは、私の知るあらゆる少女の中で、最も勇敢な少女です。感服」

　深々と一礼し、クリンドがアンネローゼやロズワールにするように、あるいは彼が本当に素晴らしいと心から思える人にするように、そう述べる。
　それに微笑み返してから、ペトラは自分を見つめるメィリィの視線に気付く。彼女の丸い瞳がどこか不安げなのを見て、ペトラはそっと彼女を抱き寄せた。

「わからないけどお、きっと、ペトラちゃんは大馬鹿だわあ」

「ふふっ、ひどいの。わたしは頭いいし、可愛くてカッコいいんだよ」

　なんて、人聞きの悪いメィリィにそんな風に言い返し、抱きしめた彼女の肩越しに、ペトラは所在なげに立ち尽くすイマジナリースバルを見つめた。
　ようよう、耳から手を下げたイマジナリースバル、その、どれだけ見ても愛おしさの尽きない顔を見ながら、ペトラは自分史上、最高の可愛さを更新し、告げる。

「スバル、大好き」
